Full Description
Banked and ditched linear features are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs on Gore Hill, Up Cerne (1, 2). The features comprise sections of linear ditches and banks positioned parallel to each other on a SSW-NNE axis. This is broadly perpendicular to historic field boundaries to the north and west but not quite on the same alignment with the historic field pattern adjacent to the east, which suggests a possible medieval origin. The features are situated closely adjacent to two Iron Age field systems to the southwest and southeast (MDO2624; 2812) and it is possible that they are outliers to these and of prehistoric origin. Alternatively, they may be field boundaries of post medieval date. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.
Some of the features are visible as cropmarks on 2002 Google Earth imagery (3).
