Full Description
Sub-circular ditched and scarped features, and additional ditched linear features, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs to the northeast of Poor Lot, Batcombe (1). The features are adjacent to two post medieval quarries (MDO43001; 43002) and are within an area recorded as old quarries on the OS 1st Edition map (2), probably of post medieval date. The features are probably post medieval extractive pits and trackways.
The features are juxtaposed between additional linear banked and ditched features which may also be extractive in nature but may alternatively be older in date; possibly field boundaries and/or trackways of prehistoric (Iron Age?) origin (see MDO43004). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.
The features are still visible on current Google Earth imagery.
