Full Description

The Rev H Place (local incumbent from 1778 until his death in 1828) reported that at Whiteway large quantities of human bones were found when quarries were dug for road material. The inhumations were generally 5 to 6 feet beneath the surface, extended in an east to west direction, and placed in regular close ranks. <1>

"These remains were found in a field on the south side of White Way Lane and a short distance west of the north end of Hinton Lane. The original Name Book mentions a supposition that these were Roman Remains". <4>

The quarry (?) at ST 7930 1779 is at present overlain by a pile of cut timber; there is also evidence of disturbed ground at ST 7929 1781. Further east at ST 7935 1777, are the clearly identifiable remains of a grassed over quarry. Published as such on O.S. 25" at 1900 <4>, its position relevent to White Way Lane, and Hinton Lane is as described in the Rev. ONB (1902) <5>, this could well be the find- spot of the inhumations. No survey action. <6>
