Full Description
Linear banked features are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs in the area of Combe Botttom, Maiden Newton (1). The features are situated within an extensive Iron Age/Romano-British field system (MDO42979; NRHE Hob UID 453063)where they comprise a series of parallel curvilinear and linear banks positioned along a short southwest-facing slope. The features appear juxtaposed between potentially late prehistoric earthworks and later, possibly medieval to post medieval boundaries. They may be lynchets of late prehistoric date, although a later, possibly medieval, origin is perhaps more likely; on their southwest side they correspond with, or are respected by, a historic field boundary recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.
The features are still visible as earthworks on current Google Earth imagery.
