Full Description
Multiple sub-circular pits are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs across the area of The Combe, Sydling St Nicholas (1 - 3). Some of the larger features are recorded as old chalk pits on the OS 1st Edition map (4). The remaining features are also considered likely to be post medieval chalk pits. Several of the features are positioned against or cut into the banks of an Iron Age/Romano-British field system (MDO42966).
The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project. The majority are still visible on current Google Earth imagery.
