Summary

Linear banks belonging to an Iron Age/ Romano-British field system are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery on Eastfield Hill, Sydling St Nicholas. The features may be an extension of a further area of Iron Age/Romano-British field system (MDO42933; NRHE Hob UID 453117) on Shearplace Hill to the south. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description

SY 638 992. Oval enclosures and Celtic fields on Eastfield Hill. Two or perhaps three enclosures on the crest of the west-facing spur overlooking the Sydling Brook. They are 80-100 ft across and appear to be integrated into the Celtic field system, which is in turn an extension of the Shearplace Hill system. <1>

Linear banks belonging to an Iron Age/ Romano-British field system are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery on Eastfield Hill, Sydling St Nicholas <2-4>. The features may be an extension of a further area of Iron Age/Romano-British field system (MDO42933) on Shearplace Hill to the south. On the south side of Eastfield Hill the features merge with an area of medieval strip lynchets (MDO42952) and the two groups of features may overlap. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Many of the features are still visible as cropmarks on current Google Earth imagery <5> and earthworks on current Lidar imagery <4>.
