Summary

A series of linear banks and ditches are visible as cropmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery on the east side of Magiston Hill, Godmanstone. The features are part of an extensive Iron Age/Romano-British field system (NRHE Hob UID 453134). They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description

(Centred SY 645976) Field system plotted from air photographs (not cited) 1949. <1>

Pronounced lynchets and field banks forming Iron Age/Romano-British-type enclosures are visible at SY 644976. Similar, but not so well pronounced, lynchets and field banks are also visible at SY 643972. Faintly defined on air photographs. <2>

Reduced by ploughing to smoothed lynchets some 10m wide and at best, 0.4m high. <3>

A possible settlement represented by 3 circular hollows or embanked areas is located 300yds NW of Bunker Barn (SY 645975 approx). <4>

Many of the features are still visible as cropmarks on current Google Earth imagery.
