Summary

Several small sub-circular pits and a larger elongated pit are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs on the northeast side of Frome Vauchurch, Maiden Newton. The larger elongated feature is recorded as a gravel pit on the OS 1st Edition map. The features are situated on a terrace of the River Frome and may all be small post medieval gravel pits. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description

Several small sub-circular pits and a larger elongated pit are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs on the northeast side of Frome Vauchurch, Maiden Newton (1). The larger elongated feature is recorded as a gravel pit on the OS 1st Edition map (2). The features are situated on a terrace of the River Frome and may all be small post medieval gravel pits. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.The features are still visible on current Google Earth imagery.
