Summary

A Bronze Age barrow, possibly a bowl barrow, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery on Grimstone Down, Stratton. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description

One of a group of round barrows on Grimstone Down: Barrow 'C' - SY 64309540. A bowl barrow, 35 feet in diameter and between 2 1/2 feet and 3 feet high. <1>

Barrow 'C' - SY 64309540 one of six grass covered bowl barrows varying from 6.5 to 16 metres in diameter and 0.7 to 2 metres high. <2>

"SY 642958. Group of four mound barrows on Grimstone Down". Scheduled. <5>

The bowl barrow is as described by Authority (4) though the barrow is now scrub covered. It is 9.6 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres high.

A Bronze Age barrow, possibly a bowl barrow, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery on Grimstone Down, Stratton <7-8>. The feature comprises a very low earthwork mound approximately 10.5m in diameter and is part of a barrow cemetery comprising eight barrows. It is recorded as a tumulus on the OS 1st Edition map. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.
