Full Description

A group of three mounds are shown on OS 1" 1811 at SY 658916, on Bradford Down, just to the west of the road to Wrackleford. Another, larger, mound is also shown just to the south-east, but on the east side of the road at SY 657911. The mounds may represent round barrows but appear to have been destroyed before the first editions of the OS 6" and 25" plans (1885-86).

A well defined ring ditch, visible at SY 65899162 on RAF air photographs, may represent one of the mounds. <1>

The cropmark of a barrow 23.0 metres in diameter and with a ditch about 1.5 metres wide is visible on the OS AP at
SY 65899163 confirming <1>. Nothing is to be seen on the ground but it probably represents one of the 1811 1" barrows.

At SY 65699115, east of the road, there is a ploughed mound 9.2m in diameter and 0.2m high. Without further confirmation it is considered a doubtful barrow, since it is adjacent to a massive concrete block which formerly supported a mast, and could be upcast. Not surveyed on MSD. <2>
