Monument record MDO42644 - Second World War trench south east of White Mill Farm, Shapwick

Summary
The Pillbox Study Group note that a short length of what appears to be zig-zag close-defence trench (one of two trenches) can be seen near the north western edge of a field immediately adjacent to White Mill farm on Royal Air Force vertical photographs dated January 1947.

Full Description
The reason for the siting of trenches at this location is not clear, but they may have been in impromptu measure to defend a crossing of the River Stour White Mill Bridge, just to the west. The trenches cannot be seen on more recent aerial photographs, and are presumed to have been infilled. The site has been returned to agricultural use.
