Full Description

The remains are visible on air photographs.

Also visible are enclosures in the field centred ST 723134. <2>

Area centred ST 72301305. Vestiges of Stoke Gaylard Deserted Medieval Village survive as low amorphous, grass covered mounds cut into ridges by deep 'mole-drainage' channels. The boundary scarp is in part defined, but the two 'well defined' building platforms noted by RCHM <1> were not positively identified, although two probable building scoops are discernible at ST 72281314 and ST 72301295. The present owner <3.1> could offer no further information on this site.

Survey action not taken.

Surface markings visible <2> in area ST 723134 are drainage channels. <3>

(24) Settlement Remains (723130) formerly part of the village of Stock Gaylard, lie immediately E. of (5). The village is probably the ‘Stoches’, belonging to William of Eu in 1086 (D.B. Vol. 1, f. 82a), which had a recorded population of 11. The church was not taxed in 1291 (Hutchins III, 690). By 1304 only two people are listed as belonging to the manor (Cal. I.P.M., Vol. 4, 144), and only three are listed in the 1327 and 1333 Subsidy Rolls; thereafter there is no record of population.

The remains, covering about 2 acres, consist of a roughly rectangular area bounded to N., E. and S. by a low bank or scarp 1 ft. to 2 ft. high, and by the garden of Stock Gaylard House on the W. The interior is disturbed by later drainage channels but there are remains of closes bounded by low scarps and at elast two well-defined building platforms.
