Summary

Blandford Camp Railway, 2 miles long was constructed some time after 1914 when the Royal Naval Division took over Blandford Camp, opened in late 1918 and was closed at the end of 1919 when the camp was closed. It was reopened for 6 months in 1920-21. The tramway is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, and was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM Project.

Full Description

Blandford Camp Railway, 2 miles long, was opened late in 1918 and closed at the end of 1919. It was reopened for 6 months in 1920-21.

(OS 6" 1928 shows the track leaving the Blandford line at ST889062 and extending probably at least as far as ST916089, where there is an embankment. <1-2>

Tramway shown on the 1963 1:10,000 Ordnance Survey map. Described as 'Dismantled Railway'.

The tramway is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs <3-7>. A series of broken linear banks and ditches are visible curving west through southwest to south from the north side of Blandford Camp, extending for a distance of over 4km. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM Project.

The tramway was constructed some time after 1914 when the Royal Naval Division took over Blandford Camp, opened in 1918 and was demolished in 1919 when the camp was closed <8>.
