Monument record MDO4200 - The Pleasure Ground, Langton Long Blandford

A subcircular mound is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery near the south eastern end of Pleasure Ground, Langton. It is considered to be an landscape garden feature and was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour Catchment AI&M Project.

[ST 90330494] There is a large barrow in the pleasure grounds of Langton House. <1>

A very doubtful barrow composed of alluvial soil, and situated upon the flood plain of the R.STOUR. The mound is 26.0 m. diam, 2.7 m. high; and has a flat top 5.0m. Diameter with evidence of a
stone building or ornamentation, to judge by the stone slabs and flints. The mound is probably the result of landscape gardening - the area being known as 'the Pleasure Ground.' <2>

Field investigation by the RCHME in 1954 <2> showed the mound to be 26m in diameter, 2.7m high with a flat top 5m across and evidence of a possible stone structure. It is considered to be an landscape garden feature and was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour Catchment AI&M Project.
