Monument record MDO41982 - Pond, Nottington Lane, Weymouth

A large cut recorded during archaeological evaluation by Archaeology South-East in 2015 of a site proposed for development, and interpreted as a pond. Excavation of the feature was limited owing to flooding of the trenches, but parts of the bank were recorded and in places seemed to be revetted with slabs of mudstone. No dating evidence was recovered. A post-medieval date was considered most likely, though an apparent alignment with a coaxial field system may indicate a prehistoric origin. In view of the near hilltop location and proximity to Nottington Barrow, the excavators also considered that this feature might possibly be interpreted as a pond barrow.
