Monument record MDO41878 - Early medieval settlement, Coppice Street, Shaftesbury

Please read our .

Summary

Numerous pits, 24 wells, and enclosure ditches excavated in the course of archaeological work in advance of development of a new Tesco store. The features contained quantities of domestic pottery and refuse material. The tops of these features had been truncated by later activity, and the remains of houses or other structures could not be identified, but they are interpreted as settlement close to the historic core of the town. There was some evidence of iron working in the vicinity.
