Full Description
Ditched and banked linear features at Hound Hill are visible on aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise a series of narrow, slightly curvilinear ditches and some shorter sections of banks and scarps, which are situated within a large irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2). Some of the linear features correspond with loose rows of trees also recorded on that map, which indicate the lines of probable former historic field boundaries. The irregular character of the former field boundaries suggests a probable medieval origin. The features are considered likely to be historic field boundaries, also of possible medieval origin, although a later date for these is also possible. Some features may alternatively be post medieval drainage ditches.
The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery and the features are still variously visible in certain years. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
