Full Description

Banked and scarped linear features to the north of Cowgrove are visible on aerial photographs (1).

The features comprise broadly N-S aligned linear banks and scarps situated within irregular historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, whose irregular sinuous boundaries indicate predominantly medieval origins (2). The features sub-divide these enclosures, some of the features being set close together (between 18m and 25m apart) and loosely parallel, with a slight curve at the southern end of one longer banked linear (1). The form of the features suggests historic lynchets or field boundaries of possible medieval date, although a later origin is also possible. Some of the linear features could potentially be the remains of former medieval strip field.

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
