Full Description

Ditched linear features to the west of Kingston Lacy Park are visible on aerial photographs (1-4).

The features comprise a number of narrow irregular ditched linears situated within two historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (5). The features potentially form partial enclosures and trackways within these enclosures but any relationship with adjacent historic field boundaries is not certain. The features are also located on the eastern edge of an area of late prehistoric settlement and field systems visible on aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (e.g. MDOs 41687; 41688; 41689; 41692), although again any relationship with these sites is not certain.

The features may be field boundaries and trackways of possible historic, perhaps post medieval, origin. Alternatively they could be earlier features, possibly field boundaries, trackways and enclosures of late prehistoric origin; possibly Iron Age or Romano-British in date.Within these features are three possible pits, visible as cropmarks on a 1968 aerial photograph. These may also be features of late prehistoric date (3).

The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery but the features are not visible. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
