Monument record MDO41680 - Probable Bronze Age round barrow, New Barn Farm, Shapwick

A probable Bronze Age barrow to the north of New Barn Farm is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. The feature is one of a close grouping five such features and part of a wider concentration of Bronze Age barrows in the near vicinity. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

The feature comprises a sub-circular ring ditch approximately 7m in diameter to include a 0.4m wide ditch . The feature is one of a close grouping five such features (see MDOS 41676-41679) and part of a wider concentration of Bronze Age barrows in the near vicinity.

The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

One of a group of five ring ditches, a linear group of four with an outlier to the north. They are sited on the top of a prominent knoll known locally as Fairy Hill. This name may date from the time when the burial mounds were visible. Folklore sometimes attributes Bronze Age barrows to the work of fairys. Ring ditch visible on aerial photograph CUAP AXM64 and on the ground there is a vague swelling here measuring 25m diameter and 0.2m high. This is the northern barrow of the group.
