Full Description

Banked linear features at Rushcombe Bottom,Corfe Mullen, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The features comprise sections of narrow slightly sinous banks which correspond and align with historic field boundaries recorded on the Os 1st Edition map immediately adjacent to the east (2). The character of those historic boundaries and the irregular enclosures they create suggest enclosure of probable medieval origin, probably with some later post medieval expansion onto the higher ground of Barrow Hill to the northwest (2).

The features are presumed to also be historic field boundaries, possibly of medieval date, although a later origin is also possible.

The site is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery and the features are still visible in places under scrubby vegetation. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
