Full Description
A possible post medieval extractive pit on Barrow Hill, Corfe Mullen is visible on current Lidar imagery (1).
The features comprises two sub-oval shallow depressions between 20m and 22m long and between 12m and 13.5m wide. The features align N-S with a 6.5m strip of ground separating them. They are sistuated on open ground south of a historic trackway recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2) and adjacent to the east side of linear earthworks associated with the Roman road between Badbury Rings and Poole (MDO5461).
The eatures are considered likely to be post medieval extractive pits but may alternatively be a historic pond of possible medieval to post medieval origin.
The site is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery and the features are still visible. They were digitally plotted from current Lidar imagery by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
