Full Description

An area of post medieval extraction on open heathland at Barrow Hill, Corfe Mullen is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1-2).

The area of extraction covers an area approximately 153m long by 73m wide. There are two larger areas of deeper quarrying within this area along with a number of smaller localised pits and scarps. The OS 1st Edition map records several extensive gravel pits to the southwest (3). It seems likely that the features are also associated with post medieval gravel extraction. In the southwestern sector the extraction encroaches onto linear earthworks associated with the Roman road from Badbury Rings to Poole (MDO5461).

The site is under trees on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible, although some hollows and scarps are visible on current Lidar imagery (4). The features were digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photographs by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
