Monument record MDO41565 - Post medieval extractive pits, Corfe Mullen

Two small post medieval extractive pits on open heathland to the southwest of Corfe Mullen are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are now under the later Corfe Mullen Clay Pit. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Two small post medieval extractive pits on open heathland to the southwest of Corfe Mullen are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1-2).

The features comprise two shallow irregular pits; the larger being approximately 29m long by 16.5m wide, the smaller just 14m long by 2.7m wide. The extraction appears relatively shallow surface extraction, probably associated with post medieval gravel extraction.

The site is under the Corfe Mullen Clay Pit on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
