Full Description
An area of post medieval extractive extraction on open ground to the southwest of Corfe Mullen are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1-3).
The features comprise shallow pits and scarps and low banks extending over an area approximately 315m long by 140m wide. The extraction appears relatively shallow surface extraction, probably associated with post medieval gravel extraction; part of the central area is recorded on the OS 1st Edition map as a 'gravel pit' (4). The features are situated on open rough ground (1-4).
The site is under the Corfe Mullen Clay Pit on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
