Full Description
A small post medieval gravel pit at Corfe Mullen is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1-2).
The feature comprises a small elliptical hollow 17m long by 14.5m wide.. The feature is recorded as 'Old gravel pit' on the OS 1st Edition map, where it is shown situated on the west side of a trackway on an area of open rough ground (3). The area is still open ground in 1948 (2).
The site is under an area of trees and scrubby open ground on current Google Earth imagery and the feature is still visible. It also shows clearly on current Lidar imagery (4). The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
