Monument record MDO41539 - Historic cultivation marks, Sleight, Corfe Mullen

An area of ridged and ditched cultivation marks to the west of Sleight, Corfe Mullen, is very faintly visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are presumed to be historic, of medieval to post medieval origin, altohugh their precise character and possible date is unclear. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

An area of ridged and ditched cultivation marks to the west of Sleight, Corfe Mullen, is very faintly visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The features are faint and distinct but appear to comprise parallel ridges and ditches, possibly slightly curving and located at the north-west end of an irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, whose sinuous boundaries are likely to be medieval in origin (2). The features are bounded by a ditched linear feature, considered likely to be a historic field boundary of possible medieval date, although a later origin is possible.

The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery but the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
