Full Description

Banked and ditched linear features to the southeast of Candys Farm, Corfe Mullen, are visible on aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1-3).

The features comprises a series of broad linear banks, and one narrower linear ditch, set parallel and perpendicular to each other on a broadly southeast to northwest axis. They are situated within a large irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, whose sinuous boundaries indicate a probable medieval origin (4). The features sub-divide this larger enclosure, effectively creating a number of smaller irregular enclosures within this. Traces of ridged and ditched cultivation marks are visible as cropmarks within one of these smaller enclosures (1 and 5). These are very faint and indistinct and possibly extend further to the west. It is not clear whether they respect the banked linears or overlie them.

The character and layout of the features suggests historic field boundaries of probable medieval origin. The ridged and ditched cultivation marks visible as cropmarks; are considered likely to be medieval ridge and furrow.

The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery and some of the features are still visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
