Monument record MDO41490 - Possible medieval field system, Corfe Mullen

Banked linear features to the northeast of Corfe Mullen are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery. The features are presumed to be historic field boundaries, potentially associated with a field system of possible medieval date. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

The features comprise sections of linear bank, some of which are quite irregular or broken in form; potentially due to tumble or spread through erosion or plough action. The linear features broadly form a series of small interlinked linear enclosures on a southeast to northwest axis. The features cross a number of historic enclsoures but do not appear to have any relationship to adjacent field bounaries, as recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (4). They are considered likely to be historic field boundaries, potentially associated with a field system of possible medieval date.

The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery. Some features are visible on current Lidar imagery. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
