Monument record MDO41466 - Possible post medieval extractive pit, Henbury Manor Farm, Sturminster Marshall

A sub-oval ditched feature to the southeast of Henbury Manor Farm is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. The feature may be a post medieval extractive pit. Alternatively it may be part of a linear scarped feature to the northeast (MDO41465), thought to be a possible medieval hollow way. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

A sub-oval ditched feature to the southeast of Henbury Manor Farm is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (1).

The feature is sub-oval in form and approximately 31m long by 19m deep. Its northeast edge is not clearly defined as It is situated immediately adjacent to a possible hollow way (MDO41465) ; it is possible the feature accesses from this hollow way but this is not certain. The northwest side of the feature may just be clipped by a ditched linear feature, also visible as a cropmark and possibly a trackway of post medieval date (see MDO41459).

The sub-oval feature may be a post medieval extractive pit that abuts the west side of possible hollow way (MDO41465). The relationship, if any, between these two features is unclear and it is possible that they are both part of one larger feature.

The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery and the feature remains visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
