Full Description
An irregular ditched hollow to the east of Sturminster Marshall is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1-2).
The feature comprises a shallow irregular depression up to 35.8m long by up to 25m wide. It is situated on the northeast side of a field adjacent to the historic field boundary in 1946; a small enclosure is recorded on the OS 1st Edition map at this location, which may be this feature, although smaller in size than in 1946 (3).
The site is part of the modern golf course on current Google Earth imagery, although the historic field boundaries have been retained. The feature is still visible as a shallow depresssion on current Lidar imagery and is considered likely to be a post medieval extractive pit (2). It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
