Full Description
Ditched and banked linear features at Ensbury, Bournemouth, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features are narrow in form, some being more rectilinear, some slightly more sinuous in character. They sub-divide two irregular historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, whose curving irregular boundaries indicate a possible medieval origin (2). The features align with adjacent historic field boundaries and may themselves be historic field boundaries, probably post medieval in date although an earlier origin is also possible. Some of the features may alternatively be, or have dually functioned as, post medieval drainage ditches.
The site is under trees on te north side of a modern road on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
