Full Description
A substantial banked curvilinear feature at West Parley is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).
The feature comprises a broad curvilinear bank between 11.8m and 17.8m wide. It is situated 70m west of Dudbury Lane and follows the curving alignment of this road for approximately 350m, extending south from the corner of a historic field boundary recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and whose curvilinear character indicates a probable medieval origin (3).
The feature is also situated approximately 360m east of the Iron Age hillfort at Duds Bury camp (MDO6225).
The feature may be a historic field boundary of possible early medieval or medieval origin. Alternatively, it is possible the feature is a boundary bank of late prehistoric or early medieval origin; possibly associated with the Iron Age hillfort if contemporary in date with this.
Thefeature was digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
