Full Description

Banked and ditched linear features in Dowden's Copse are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The features are narrow and rectilinear in form and comprise two sections of linear ditch that run on a slight southwest to northeast axis, parallel with historic trackways witihn Dowden's Copse, recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2). An additional banked linear runs perpendicular to these, offsetting from a group of curvilinear banked features to the east (MDO41314), which are potentially field boundaries or wood banks of possibly medieval or earlier date.

The features are considered likely to also be historic field boundaries, probably of post medieval date, although an earlier origin for some of the features may be possible.

The site is now Beacons Farm on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
