Summary

A Bronze Age barrow, visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. In 1952 this monument was reported as 54 feet in diameter with a mound 11 feet high. It was opened in 1879 by Edward Cunnington, who found a contracted skeleton below ground level, other burnt remains, a beaker, potsherds and a small bronze dagger. A coin of Tetricus was found on the surface.

Full Description

A bowl barrow, 54 ft diameter and 11 ft high situated east of Whitfield Barn was opened by E Cunnington in 1879 who discovered a contracted inhumation below ground level, other burnt remains, a beaker, potsherds and a small bronze dagger. A coin of Tetricus wasfound on the surface. <1> <3>

Badly mis-shapen bowl barrow, averaging 20.0 m diameter and 3.0 m high, covered with trees and shrub and much burrowed. The bronze dagger of Authy 2 was seen in Dorset County Museum. <4>

SY 67069147. Bowl barrow, 20 paces diameter and 12 ft high opened by Cunnington (No 8) who revealed a primary crouched adult inhumation (female) in a central grave beneath cairn and secondary deposits of six cremations, pottery and small bronze knife-dagger. A beaker is also said to have come from this barrow. <5>

A bowl barrow located 380 metres west of Whitfield Farm, and forming part of a group of eight similar barrows, which together form a dispersed round barrow cemetery associated with an earlier long barrow. No change. <8>

Site of a Bronze Age barrow, visible as earthworks on aerial photographs <9-10>. The barrow mound appears to be 23m across.

‘(16) Bowl Barrow, ¼ m. W. of (7), is 54 ft. in diam. and 11 ft. high. This mound was opened by E. Cunnington in 1879 and found to contain a contracted skeleton below ground level, other burnt remains, a beaker, potsherds and a small bronze dagger. A coin of Tetricus was found on the surface (Dor.
