Full Description
Banked linear features to the west of Hampreston are visible on aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).
The features comprise narrow, slightly curvilinear, banks set parallel and perpendicular to each other to form a series of rectilinear enclosures within a larger irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (3). One of the banked linears overlies a larger banked linear feature, one of a series to the west (MDO41065) that are likely to be earlier in origin; the different scale and forms of the two sets of features also suggests they differ in date, although this is not certain.
The features are considered likely to be historic field boundaries of probable post medieval date.
The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery but the features are not visible; elements are, however, faintly visible on current Lidar imagery (2). They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
