Full Description
An area of cultivation marks in a field to the southeast of Hampreston is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise narrow straight parallel ridges around 4mwide with 1m wide ditches in between. The features align southest to northwest across the majority of a large irregular enclosure adjacent to the River Stour, recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2); the features are ot evident in the southwest corner of the enclosure in 1945 (1). The features may be those of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow. They appear to be overlain by possible post medieval gravel extraction (MDO41266) although the precise relationship between the features is not clear.
The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery, where the predominant landuse appears to be pasture. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
