Full Description

A probable post medieval gravel pit to the southeast of Hampreston is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).

The feature is situated on the edge of the north bank of the River Stour and comprises an irregular ditched depression around 32m long and 19m wide, with a long narrow diched linear extending west from its south side for 18m before turning south towards the river edge. The feature may be a small extractive pit associated with post medieval gravel extraction; there are further similar features along this section of the River Stour.

The site is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery. The feature is still faintly visible as a shallow scar. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
