Full Description
A ditched feature to the northeast of Knighton House is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The feature comprises an elongated irregular depression around 48m long, with a narrow linear ditch extending from its northeast side for 29m towards the Stour riverbank. The feature may be a post medieval extractive pit, possibly a gravel pit; there are a series of similar features along both banks of this section of the River Stour. A 1947 aerial photograph shows many of these features particularly well, as they are waterlogged (1).
The site is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery. The feature is still partly visible as a shallow scar. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
