Full Description
A ditched curvilinear feature to the northeast of Knighton House is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise a curving narrow ditch around 372m in length, with shorter sections of linear ditch projecting from its southeast end. The main ditch is aligned north to south along the east side of a neck of land formed by a wide curve in the River Stour. This ditch almost precisely mirrors a parallel section of a similar linear feature around 175m to the west, which is recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2). This latter feature appears to be a long drainage channel, probably of post medieval origin. It is considered likely that this feature, although not shown on the OS 1st Edition map, is also a post medieval drainage ditch.
The site is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery and the feature is still visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
