Full Description
Loose clusters of small sub-circular pits and enclosures on Canford Heath are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features are situated in loose groupings acros the slopes and crests of low rises of ground. They are similar to numerous other such features dispersed across Canford Heath and are considered to possibly be modern military in origin, possibly weapons pits or dug-outs associated with a wartime military training area. Alternatively they may be post medieval extractive pits.
The site is largely under modern housing development on current Google Earth imagery. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
