Full Description
Banked and ditched curvilinear features on the open heath of Dunyeat's Hill are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise a number of broken curvilinear banks and ditches that together have the form of a large sub-oval enclosure around 138.5m long by 129m wide with an opening on its north side. The features have the form of historic field boundaries but are situated on an area of open heath with no obvious correlation with any historic pattern of enclosure in this part of the heath (2). The enclosure does correspond with a group of linear trackways of probable post medieval date that cross over and through its south side heading northeast (MDO41193).
The features are considered likely to be historic field boundaries of possible post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible.
The majority of the site is still open heath on current Google Earth imagery, with some encroachment of housing development to the west. The features are still faintly visible on the open ground. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
