They are considered to be the remains of the former medieval drove road of Smugglers Lane at this location and were digitally plotted as part of the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.

Ditched and banked linear features are visible as earthworks within the grounds of Stepleton House on Environment Agency lidar imagery (EA 2018). The features form a deep north-south running hollow way with banked sides and are considered to be the remains of the former medieval drove road of Smugglers Lane at this location and were digitally plotted as part of the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
