Full Description

A series of three large and irregular post medieval extractive pits on Dunyeat's Hill are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The features extend across the south side of Dunyeat's Hill, the two largest features being between 160m to 200m in length and 75m and up to 141m in width, the smallest of the three to the south being just 41m long by 61m wide. Two small shallow rectilinear depressions, shallow and with straight cut edges are situated on the north side of the easternmost feature.

The features are presumed to be associated with post medieval extraction on Canford Heath ; the heathland on which the features are situated in 1946 (part of Canford Heath) is typically scarred by widescale post medieval extraction, which is characteristically shallow but with some areas of deeper extraction also present.

The site is partially still open heath and partially modern housing on current Google Earth imagery. The features are not obviously visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
