Full Description

A group of small ditched sub-circular ditched features on Canford Heath are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).

The features comprise a row of five small irregular pits situated closely adjacent to each other on the level plateau of a low spur of ground. The features are around 5m across and beween 5m and 10m long and consist of a central pit with surrounding upcast bank material. There are two outlying pits 14m to the northwest and adjacent to the southeast. The features may be small post medieval extractive pits but may alternatively be dug-outs or weapons pits assoicated with wartime military activity on the heath.

The site is still open heath on current Google Earth imagery and the features are still visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
