Full Description

A series of shallow surface post medieval extractive pits on Canford Heath are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The features comprise three irregular and elongated shallow scrapes around the side of a curving northwest-facing slope of ground. The features are bare ground with some tree cover present in 1946; this almost entirely covers the exposed ground in some areas (1). The features are crossed by a series of modern trackways and vehicular access roads.

The features are presumed to be associated with post medieval extraction on Canford Heath ; the heathland on which the features are situated in 1946 (part of Canford Heath) is typically scarred by widescale post medieval extraction, which is characteristically shallow but with some areas of deeper extraction also present.

The site is still open heath on current Google Earth imagery. The features are still faintly visible in places under scrubby vegetation. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
