Full Description

A post medieval extractive pit on Canford Heath is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The feature comprises a shallow irregular depression 72m by 66m and already covered in scubby vegetation by 1946 (1). The northeast edge of the feature may encroach on the souhtwest side of a Bronze Age barrow (MDO6761).

The feature is presumed to be associated with post medieval extraction on Canford Heath ; the heathland on which the feature is situated in 1946 (part of Canford Heath) is typically scarred by widescale post medieval extraction, which is characteristically shallow but with some areas of deeper extraction also present.

The site is still open heath on current Google Earth imagery. The feature is still faintly visible under scrubby vegetation. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
