Full Description
Banked and ditched linear and curvilinear features on the open heath to the south of Canford Magna are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).
The features are located on open heath bounded by long straight and regular historic field boundaries recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and probably post medieval in origin (3). The features comprise a series of rectlinear and curvilinear banks that interlink and form partial irregular enclosures. They respect the historic field boundaries shown on the OS 1st Edition map and may themselves be historic field boundaries of possible post medieval date. Some of the features are overlain to the south by an early 20th century wartime bomb decoy site (MDO41179; Hob UID 1467763); that feature respects the line of one particularly long southwest to northeast aligned linear to its west (1and 2)..
The majority of the site is a modern quarry on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
