Full Description
Banked linear features on the open heath to the south of Canford Magna are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).
The features are located on open heath but on the edge of the historic tree line recorded on the OS 1st Edition map; one of the banked linears corresponds with a dotted line defining the edge of the historic tree line on the map, suggesitng a possible historic field boundary or plantation bank (3). Additional banked linears in the southeast of the group are narrow and rectilinear in character and appear to form partial rectilinear enclosures (2).
The features are presumed to be historic field boundaries of probable post medieval origin but it is possible some are post medieval plantation banks, or had a dual function .
The site is a modern quarry on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
