Monument record MDO41169 - Possible Bronze Age barrow, Canford Heath, Poole

Please read our .

Summary

A sub-circular banked and ditched feature on Canford Heath is visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The feature may be the badly damaged bowl barrow recorded under MDO6867 but may alternatively be one of the many sub-circular military earthworks in the near vicinity. These are probably World War Two in date and associated with a wider area of probable wartime military training activity on this area of the heath. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

A sub-circular banked and ditched feature on Canford Heath is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The feature comprises a slightly sub-oval hollow around 12m long by 9.4m wide within broken enclosing banks or perhaps the remains of a low mound; the whole feature being around 15m to 17m in diameter.

The feature may be the badly damaged bowl barrow recorded at SZ 0328 9598 under MDO6867 (around 30m to the northwest) but may alternatively be one of the many sub-circular military enclosures and earthworks in the near vicinity. These are probably World War Two in date and associated with a wider area of probable wartime military training activity on this area of the heath.

The site is still open heath on current Google Earth imagery but the feature is not obviously visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
